Steak N Shake Franchise

Discover the Legacy of Steak ‘n Shake: A History of Premium Burgers and Milkshakes

Steak ‘n Shake originated in February 1934, nestled in the heart of Normal, Illinois. Its visionary founder, Gus Belt, pioneered a novel concept centered around premium burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes. For more than eight decades, the company’s name has remained a testament to its rich heritage.

The term steak was a nod to the STEAKBURGER, while shake represented the delectable hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus Belt was unwavering in his commitment to delivering the finest burgers and shakes in the industry. To showcase the exceptional quality of his burgers, he would dramatically roll in a barrel of steaks, which included round, sirloin, and T-bone cuts, and grind the meat right before the guests’ eyes. This dramatic display gave birth to our iconic slogan, ‘In Sight It Must Be Right.’

Today, after more than 80 years, Steak ‘n Shake continues to uphold the timeless tradition of offering the nation’s most exceptional, freshest, and most flavorful burgers and shakes.
